Obtaining a passenger and school bus endorsement for a commercial driver’s license (CDL) is necessary for those who wish to transport passengers, especially school children on a bus. In order to qualify for this endorsement, the driver must have a valid CDL, pass a background check and security threat assessment, have a clean driving record and pass a medical exam meeting federal standards for vision, hearing, and overall health. Additionally, the driver must complete an ELDT state-approved training program covering regulations, safety and emergency procedures. Finally, the driver must pass a written test and a skills test which includes a pre-trip inspection, basic control skills, and an on-road test. All these requirements are in place to ensure that the driver is fit and has the knowledge and skills to transport passengers, particularly children, safely.
