To obtain a commercial driver’s license (CDL) in 2023, you must be at least 18 years old and have a valid driver’s license. There are additional age requirements for certain types of vehicles, such as 21 years old for interstate driving. In most states, you must also pass a medical examination and meet certain physical requirements to be eligible for a CDL.
To obtain a CDL, you will need to:
-
Determine which type of CDL you need. There are three classes of CDLs, based on the type of vehicle you will be driving: Class A, Class B, and Class C. Each class has different requirements and restrictions.
-
Meet the eligibility requirements for a CDL in your state. These requirements may include age, physical condition, and driving experience.
-
Obtain a CDL Learners Permit by passing a written knowledge test. This test covers the rules of the road and safe driving practices.
- Complete Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT) through an approved training provider.
-
Complete a CDL training program or obtain the required driving experience. Some states require you to complete a CDL training program.
-
Pass a road skills test. This test is a driving test that evaluates your ability to safely operate a commercial vehicle.
-
Obtain any endorsements you need. Some types of commercial vehicles, such as those carrying hazardous materials or passengers, require additional endorsements on your CDL. To obtain these endorsements, you may need to pass additional written and skills tests.
Once you have completed these steps, you can apply for your CDL at your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) or similar agency. You will need to bring documents such as your learner’s permit, a medical examination report, and proof of identity and residency. You may also need to pay a fee to obtain your CDL.
