To obtain a school bus endorsement (S) on a commercial driver’s license (CDL), a driver must:

  1. Meet all the basic requirements for a CDL, including passing a medical exam and an Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT) general knowledge theory training specifically for the (S) Endorsement. 

  2. Pass a knowledge test for the school bus endorsement at your local DMV or equivalent state agency, which covers the laws and regulations specific to operating a school bus.

  3. Pass a skills test, which includes a pre-trip inspection, basic control skills test, and a road test in a school bus.

  4. Complete any additional training or certification required by your employer or the state.

  4. Complete any additional training or certification required by your employer or the state.

  5. Pay any necessary fees.
